Environmental Nonprofits To Support For Earth Day 2022

At Outer, we’re on a mission to help people bring more of their lives outside. We design the world’s most innovative outdoor furniture, emphasizing comfort and durability.  From the very beginning, sustainability has been at the heart of every decision we make. As part of our commitment to making better decisions for our planet, we’re highlighting a few amazing, Earth-minded non-profits that we know and support, to inspire you to get involved and help protect our environment for future generations.

One Tree Planted

Est. 2014 - Shelburne VT

One Tree Planted is a non-profit dedicated to reforestation, boosting biodiverse habitats, and creating a positive social impact around the world. Outer, together with One Tree Planted, has committed to planting 1 million trees.

Why: Trees help clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink and provide habitat to over 80% of the world's terrestrial biodiversity. Forests provide jobs to over 1.6 billion people, absorb harmful carbon from the atmosphere, and are key ingredients in 25% of all medicines. We are proud to partner with One Tree Planted as part of our 1% For The Planet membership.

Get Involved: Outer is a proud sponsor of One Tree Planted’s Earth Month Initiative, which involves over where they’ll be organizing 100 Tree Planting events across the planet globe. Looking for one near you? Sign up through this link!.

Surfrider

Est. 1984 - Malibu, CA

Surfrider was founded by a group of surfers who were concerned with the health risks associated with environmental threats due to increased coastal development. They now have 80 chapters, including 96 student clubs, and more than 1 million supporters. The non-profit focuses on coastal preservation, plastic pollution, ocean protections, beach access, and clean water. Last year, Outer participated in a Surfrider beach cleanup in Santa Monica, near our headquarters.

Why: Biodiversity and ecological integrity of the planet’s coasts are necessary and irreplaceable. The ocean is home to many species that are an important part of our ecosystem, and can be drastically affected by development near the coast.  As a company based in a coastal state, we enjoy our beaches every day, and believe it’s of the utmost importance to protect them for the future. Get Involved: Surfrider has  many  volunteering opportunities to respond to local threats in coastal communities across the US. At any given moment, they are working on more than 100 initiatives across the country. To join an effort near you, click here.

Climate Neutral

Est. 2019 - San Francisco, CA

Climate Neutral works to eliminate global carbon emissions by getting brands to measure, offset, and reduce the carbon they emit. The non-profit works hand-in-hand with companies by sharing a simple set of tools and a certification that makes carbon footprinting more accessible to set clear guidelines for carbon offsetting, and inspires partners to work on reducing emissions directly.  When a company gets certified, it achieves zero net carbon emissions for all of the carbon it creates while making and delivering its products or services for a year. Last year, Outer proudly became Climate Neutral certified, and we plan to continue those efforts this year.

Why: We believe consumers and brands must work together to drive the world toward the zero net emissions future that science tells us we urgently need. Since its founding, Climate Neutral has offset 265,056 tonnes of CO2 through projects including reforestation, and renewable energy development.

Get Involved: Look for the ‘Climate Neutral’ label or certification on products when shopping.

5 Gyres Institute

Est. 2009 - Santa Monica, CA

The 5 Gyres Institute is a leader in the global movement against plastic pollution with more than 10 years of expertise in scientific research and engagement on plastic pollution issues. 5 Gyres works tirelessly to find solutions to the plastic pandemic by working with people, politicians, and corporations to stop emissions at the source. In addition to our Wicker Chairs each containing the equivalent of 99 plastic bottles diverted from landfills and oceans, and our 1188Eco-Friendly Rugs being made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles, in 2020, we donated 1% of our total profits to 5 Gyres Institute in support of their monumental efforts.

Why: Together, we determined that there were 269,000 metric tons and 5.25 trillion particles on the ocean’s surface and if we don’t make changes by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. As a society, we must use less plastic, to begin with in order to tackle the waste already being created.
