When it comes to outdoor furniture, materials are the most important deciding factor. You want something that's not only beautiful and classic but also durable and sustainable. This balance of form and function is what drives us to continuously innovate as we thoughtfully expand our outdoor furniture collection. That's why we're thrilled to introduce our new OuterStone Fire Pit Table in sintered stone, a game-changing addition to your outdoor space.
What is Sintered Stone?
Sintered stone is an exceptionally durable material that combines the beauty of natural stone with the performance of modern engineering. This unique material is created through a process known as sintering, where raw materials, such as minerals, glass, and natural stones, are subjected to extreme heat and pressure to bond them together. The resulting sintered stone is then baked at 1,200 degrees Celsius (2,192 degrees Fahrenheit), creating the OuterStone slab that's incredibly strong and versatile.
Sintered stone boasts impressive qualities, including high stain resistance and resistance to extreme temperatures. Its non-porous surface makes it a more hygienic surface where fewer areas for bacteria or fungus can grow. Sintered stone is easy to maintain and can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. While it's commonly used for kitchen counters, sintered stone is an excellent yet underutilized option for outdoor furniture.
Outer chose sintered stone for our newest Fire Pit Table because it ticks all the boxes we look for in a new outdoor material. In addition to its outstanding properties, OuterStone is UV-resistant, ensuring it won't fade or lose integrity with sun exposure. It also has a lower environmental impact compared to other engineered stones like quartz, being made of 100% natural materials with no need for petroleum based resin binders. It embodies the best of both worlds: the aesthetic appeal of natural stone and the remarkable durability that Outer is known for.
Sintered Stone vs. Limestone, Quartz, and Concrete: What's the Difference?
When developing the Outer Fire Pit Table in Sintered Stone, our team explored various materials, including limestone, quartz, and concrete, before choosing sintered stone.
Limestone is often used for garden benches and outdoor dining tabletops, offering natural beauty that suits classic and rustic outdoor settings. However, limestone also has a relatively low hardness on the Mohs scale, making it susceptible to scratches. Plus the porous nature of limestone means it can accumulate fine particles and debris, which can cause scratching or dulling of its finish. The porous surface also makes it susceptible to staining and discoloration, especially over time and in harsh outdoor conditions.
Quartz, while popular for indoor countertops, is less heat-resistant than other materials and prone to discoloration upon exposure to high temperatures. It’s also not often used for outdoor furniture as it's quite vulnerable to UV damage which can lead to discoloration over time.
Concrete is an excellent choice for modern and minimalistic outdoor aesthetics and is a smart option for fire pits thanks to its heat resistance. Given that Outer already has offers a concrete 3-in-1 Fire Pit Table, the team wanted to introduce a fresh material for a new twist on this fan-favorite fire pit.
Sintered stone emerged as the preferred choice for Outer's next Fire Pit Table due to its unmatched durability, easy maintenance, and eco-friendly qualities. OuterStone’s marbled look seamlessly complements the broader Outer collection, allowing it to fit seamlessly into your existing outdoor space.
