Outer Makes an Appearance at The Whalebone’s Boneyard in Montauk
Summer is fast approaching, and here at Outer, we are ready for it! We can already envision all the outdoor BBQs, poolside gatherings, and future beach days ahead. When imagining all this summer fun, we started thinking about ways to connect with new friends and communities who also have a love for outdoor living. We’re always on a mission to infuse comfort, quality, and consciousness into a variety of outdoor spaces, and when seeking a partner to help us with this goal, Whalebone resurfaced again and again.
Whalebone is a New York–based multi-hyphenate brand that runs a print magazine, two brick-and-mortar shops (including The Boneyard in Montauk), a radio station, a daily newsletter, and so much more. Our collaborations with them are already well underway, with more coming soon.
For starters, we refashioned their cafe and shop, The Boneyard in Montauk, with our supremely comfortable Outer Sofas. And currently, we’re sponsoring round-the-clock tunes over at Whalebone Radio, streamable on all your mobile devices. In June, we’re hosting an outdoor movie series at The Boneyard, complete with comfy seats for all (subscribe to Whalebone’s newsletter, Afternoon Delight, for more details). Plus, get in on Outer x Whalebone’s “Ultimate Backyard Giveaway,” which is a chance to win a free Outer sofa set and other essential gear from your favorite outdoor brands. (Stay tuned for details on how to enter.)
We break down the story behind this unique collective — and Outer’s partnership with them — below.
So what exactly is Whalebone?
In 2010, Whalebone started as a low-key operation selling hand-printed T-shirts and delivering magazines out of an old van around Montauk, NY.
In 2015, the Whalebone magazine launched as a limited-edition summer run that quickly evolved into regular releases.
Whalebone eventually put down roots at The Boneyard in Montauk, a shop, cafe, and dog meet-up (currently decked out in Outer furniture). They also opened their NYC-based headquarters, surf shop, and event space, Whalebone on Bleecker.
As you can see, they’ve got their fingers in a lot of pots — with more ideas emerging all the time.
Why Outer x Whalebone?
It made too much sense. Whalebone’s free-spirited creative, entrepreneurial mindset and love of the outdoors really aligned with our own. They’ve built a close knit yet expansive community of surfers, beach-goers, weekenders, and overall great people thanks to their outreach in Montauk and New York City; and they’ve expanded their presence to an even wider audience with the popularity of their international print magazine.
We knew their love of conscious outdoor living, inspired design, and general delight was right up our alley.
When does the summer movie series kick off?
Beginning June 15 and running through September, Outer will host a series of Sea Creature-inspired movie nights in The Backyard at The Boneyard. Guests can nestle in to an uber-soft Outer seat for a night of cinema under the stars.
We’ll keep safety protocols top of mind (distancing + masks as needed). Subscribe to Afternoon Delight for details, dates, and to score tickets.
What is Afternoon Delight?
In addition to being the title of a pretty catchy 70's pop song, it's the name of an email that Whalebone sends daily. It includes “delight, joy, news, videos, interviews, playlists, podcast recommendations, chocolate chip cookie recipes, ways to have free drinks sent to your door, insinuations about Jerry Seinfeld’s driving ability, and other good things.” Subscribe here.
How do I get my hands on their print magazine?
There’s more in store with the creative minds over at Whalebone and you’re invited along for the ride. Be sure to subscribe to our newsletter as well, and follow us and them on social for details on upcoming events, collaborations, giveaways, and more.
