All-Weather Protection

Why You Should Use Outdoor Furniture Covers

Outdoor furniture is made to live outside—but a fitted cover can make a meaningful difference when storms, snow, falling leaves, or a long off-season arrive.

The Short Answer

Are outdoor furniture covers really necessary?

Not after every use. But when furniture faces heavier weather or will sit unused for an extended period, a full cover adds practical protection around both the cushions and the frame.

Even durable patio furniture is continually exposed to rain, snow, sunlight, pollen, dirt, leaves, bird droppings, and windblown debris. Over time, that can mean more cleaning and more seasonal maintenance. A properly fitted cover helps limit unnecessary exposure and makes reopening your outdoor space easier.

  • Extended rain or snow
  • Strong sunlight and UV exposure
  • Storms and windblown debris
  • Falling leaves, dirt, and pollen
  • Travel or long periods of non-use
  • Fall and winter conditions

Protect more than the cushions

Cushions often receive the most attention, but rain, snow, dirt, leaves, and sunlight also reach frames, arms, tabletops, legs, and connecting components.

An All-Weather Cover fits over the complete matching furniture piece, adding a barrier around the cushions and overall structure. Because each Outer cover is made for a specific collection, seat count, and configuration, it provides a more tailored fit than a loose universal cover.

Outer covers are designed for compatible Outer furniture and are not universal covers for other brands.

Why Cover Your Furniture?

Protection that pays off season after season

02

Less seasonal cleanup

A cover helps keep pollen, leaves, dirt, and debris away from the furniture underneath, so getting the patio ready takes less work.

03

Added rain and snow defense

Water-resistant fabric and a fitted shape help shield matching furniture during wet weather and off-season exposure.

04

Reduced sun exposure

During long periods of non-use, a cover adds another layer between the furniture and sustained sunlight.

05

Protection during travel

Leaving for a week or longer? Covering your furniture helps keep it protected while no one is home to check the patio.

06

Easier spring reopening

Instead of beginning the season with a major cleaning project, remove the covers, inspect the furniture, and complete routine care.

07

Year-round flexibility

All-Weather Covers are not only for winter. Use them during storms, frequent rain, strong sun, or any extended period of non-use.

Fall & Winter Checklist

How to cover outdoor furniture for winter

Good winter protection begins before the cover goes on. Never seal damp or dirty furniture beneath a cover for an entire season.

  1. Clear the surface.
Remove loose leaves, pollen, dust, and debris.
  2. Clean the furniture.
Follow the care instructions for the specific frame and cushion materials.
  3. Let everything dry.
Allow the frame and cushions to dry completely before covering.
  4. Confirm the fit.
Match the cover to the collection, seat count, and furniture configuration.
  5. Secure every point.
Close the zippers and fasten each strap and buckle.
  6. Check it periodically.
Remove accumulated water, heavy snow, ice, leaves, or debris.

What to Look For

How to choose an outdoor furniture cover

A cover works best when it fits the furniture, stays secure, sheds water, and allows changing outdoor conditions to be managed properly.

  • A furniture-specific fitMatch the collection, material, size, seat count, and sectional orientation.
  • Water-resistant fabricChoose material designed to help repel rain and protect against wet-weather exposure.
  • Secure fastening pointsZippers, straps, and buckles help keep the cover correctly positioned.
  • Vented constructionAirflow helps manage moisture and changing conditions beneath the cover.
  • A shape that sheds waterAvoid allowing rain, ice, or heavy snow to remain pooled on the surface.
  • Easy installationA cover that is simple to orient and secure is more likely to be used consistently.

Water-resistant does not mean completely waterproof. For the best protection, install the cover securely and inspect it during prolonged or severe weather.

When to Use One

Cover outdoor furniture when the weather—or your schedule—calls for it

Consider a full cover when heavy rain or snow is expected, when your area is entering fall or winter, when the patio will go unused for a week or longer, or when you are leaving home for an extended trip. Covers can also be useful on exposed patios that regularly collect leaves, pollen, coastal salt spray, or windblown debris.

Between normal everyday uses, OuterShell® helps protect compatible cushions. During heavier weather or longer periods of non-use, an All-Weather Cover adds protection around the entire matching furniture piece.
